How Democrats Elected George W. Bush (Part I)

It’s no secret that democrats, and far-left liberals in particular, have a seething hatred for George W. Bush. Columnist Charles Krauthammer even coined the term “Bush Derangement Syndrome” to describe the bizarre, seething, foaming-at-the-mouth reaction that liberals have to Bush. As Krauthammer described it, Bush Derangement Syndrome is “the acute onset of paranoia in otherwise normal people in reaction to the policies, the presidency — nay — the very existence of George W. Bush”.

The great irony, though, is that democrats themselves got George W. Bush elected to the White House. Let me explain.

Why Gay Marriage is (probably) Doomed

The gay marriage issue, centered around Prop 8 in California, is marching its way up the court system.

A Federal judge in that state has overruled Prop 8 and upheld the rights of gay couples to marry. On it will go to the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals, which is notoriously liberal and will most likely uphold the lower court’s decision, although the 9th Circuit has surprised us on a few occasions, such as their incorporation of the Second Amendment against the states.

May-Issue CCW Laws Breed Corruption

My interest in carrying firearms began in 2005 when I was living in Scottsdale, Arizona, a town with a shockingly high burglary rate. Because the danger of coming home one day only to confront criminals was very real, I made the decision to get a CCW permit (Concealed Carry of Weapons), and begin carrying a loaded and concealed gun in the event of such an unthinkable situation.

Fortunately, Arizona is a shall-issue CCW state, meaning that I didn’t have to give the authorities a reason why I needed to carry a gun. I simply took the class, passed the background check, and my permit came in the mail about ten days later. I had joined the ranks of millions of other lawfully armed Americans.

(As I write this, Arizona is becoming a Constitutional Carry state, meaning that anyone can carry without the need for a permit.)

Then in 2007, I moved to Newport Beach, California. Knowing that California has a “may-issue” CCW policy, meaning that the authorities are not required to issue a CCW to qualified citizens and have total discretion to issue or not to issue, I began doing my research ahead of time.

Fortunately for me, Newport Beach is located in Orange County, which at the time was under the jurisdiction of Sheriff Mike Carona, an avid supporter of the 2nd Amendment and right-to-carry. However, getting the permit was still no walk in the park.

In order to avoid attracting too much attention from the liberal tyrants in Sacramento who rule California’s citizens, Sheriff Carona had to make the process fairly difficult. After all, if he ran a shall-issue outfit and gave permits to everyone who applied – in a large urban county like Orange – the state legislature would likely ban CCW altogether and go to a no-issue status.

Under California law, a CCW applicant must show sufficient “good cause” before a permit will be issued. Each sheriff gets to decide what constitutes good cause. In Sheriff Carona’s case, valid good cause consisted of being an avid firearms enthusiast who transports guns to and from a shooting range on a frequent basis. The logic behind this had to do with past cases of gang members and other criminals following people home from shooting ranges, only to hold them up in their driveways and steal their guns. In order to prevent those criminals from being able to steal a firearm hobbyist’s guns, Sheriff Carona decided that such people should be lawfully armed.

I went through the tedious and expensive application process, including an in-person interview at the Sheriff’s Department, a training class, qualifying on the range with each individual gun I wished to carry, getting fingerprinted and paying for a background check, and finally, having my carry guns inspected by the Sheriff’s armory.

After all that I picked up my permit and began carrying again in California.

Fast-forward to 2008. Sheriff Carona resigned under indictment thanks to some stupid decisions he’d made as sheriff. The County Board of Supervisors then appointed a new sheriff, Sandra Hutchens, who was previously with the Los Angeles Sheriff’s Department and brought all of the typical liberal, anti-gun Los Angeles hysteria with her. She promptly mailed out letters to Orange County’s CCW holders, myself included, explaining that she intended to revoke our permits.

I objected, and as additional good cause, I pointed out that I as a popular New York Times best-selling author, I have had my share of weirdos show up unannounced at my office, and that I required a firearm for personal protection in the event that a real nut ever showed up.

As a result of my objection, I was allowed to keep my permit and avoided revocation. After all, Hutchens operates under the Los Angeles system where only those who are famous and/or possibly capable of large campaign contributions may have any constitutional rights. I firmly believe that my best-selling author status had a lot more to do with my keeping my permit than with the threat of harm from stalkers.

And that, my friends, is exactly why a may-issue CCW system breeds corruption. It’s been well-known for decades that sheriffs in may-issue states like California and New York essentially sell CCW permits in exchange for campaign contributions. If you want a CCW, you’d better mail a check to the sheriff, and then call in your favor after he or she wins re-election. In the case of Sheriff Sandra Hutchens, it appears that she cleared anyone with any high social status or high income to continue carrying, presumably with the hope that those people would reciprocate with a donation to her campaign, and the cycle could continue.

The only fair and equitable way to issue CCW permits is by a shall-issue system. When all citizens who meet basic requirements, including training, passing a background check, and demonstrating safe and proficient shooting skill are granted permits, there is no room for corruption.

For those of you in Orange County, California, Hutchens is up for election this year. Get rid of her in the primary election in June and vote in Craig Hunter, a Republican candidate for sheriff who supports right-t0-carry for all. (Not surprisingly, Hutchens was a lifelong Democrat until she got the job in Orange County and quickly changed her party affiliation.)

The Thievery of Obama’s New Taxes

It’s tax time. I got my return completed and filed early, and no surprise, the IRS cashed my check practically as soon as they received it.

It’s already infuriating to pay high taxes in this country, only to have the majority of the benefits go to lazy government employees and those who are too lazy to produce anything. As Robert Kiyosaki put it so well, “Taxes punish those who produce and reward those who don’t produce.”

Well, as if that’s not enough, now Obama is proposing to raise taxes across the board on all dividends and investments, including raising the capital gains tax from 15% to 20%, as well as the additional 3.8% tax that’s being slapped on all investment income to fund ObamaCare.

The real truth about healthcare “reform”

The current attempt by American-hating leftists to hijack our healthcare system and place it under government control especially infuriates me because, first, I had to use my health insurance in a big way last year, and more recently relocated to a new state and had to go through the process of finding new coverage despite my pre-existing condition.

Background: Many years ago, I suffered a severe sprain of my left ankle while running. It was one of those sprains where the shin bone and ankle bone slam together, damaging the cartilage. There is no cure or treatment for that kind of cartilage damage, save for a few experimental procedures that are yet to work successfully (all you run-happy fitness nuts, be forewarned).

Over time since that severe sprain, the ankle has worsened to the current diagnosis of “severe post-traumatic arthritis.”

Fast-forward about twelve years: Last year, while hauling some heavy boxes, I re-twisted the ankle, this time with nasty consequences. I was in severe pain and the doctor put me into an aircast just to get around comfortably. A few weeks later I underwent minor surgery to clean out the ankle joint and remove a bit of the destroyed cartilage, as a temporary fix to relieve pain and inflammation.

At the time I was insured with the Blue Cross Blue Shield (BCBS) organization, and since I was living in illegal-happy California, I was paying a cool $339/month for coverage.

BCBS, a non-profit health insurance organization, fought me tooth-and-nail over paying the claim, even though I’d been insured with them for years without even one visit to a doctor. It took endless hours on my part to respond to their disputes and attempts to deny coverage before the matter was finally settled and they agreed to pay. Even then, they sent numerous “fishing expedition” letters, trying to determine if they could find a third party to blame and subsequently sue for my injury.

Moving on to 2009, I left the People’s Republic of Kalifornia and made the wise decision to relocate to the Free State of Texas. Since our laws currently prohibit interstate health insurance coverage (yes, despite what Democrats tell you, they in fact banned interstate coverage themselves), I was forced to find new insurance, and I had that major pre-existing condition to contend with.

Naturally, I started out with BCBS since I’d been with them for seven years in Arizona, and for almost three in California.

They denied coverage altogether.

Moving on, I applied with Aetna, a for-profit health insurer, since they gave me the best combination of price and coverage in their quote. I fully disclosed my pre-existing condition and waited for the rejection letter.

To my surprise, they not only approved me for coverage, but they did it with no surcharges, no waiting periods, and even covered all pre-existing conditions!

And the best news? My new premium is a mere $121/month, a far cry from the $339 price-gouging BCBS gave me in California. Sure, this has a lot to do with the fact that we don’t hand illegals everything they want on a silver platter here in Texas, but it also has to do with the efficiencies of a for-profit organization, versus the inefficiencies inherent in non-profits.

And that brings me to my point: Our current for-profit, capitalist healthcare system WORKS!

Non-profits, in my experience, do not, and the only thing worse than a non-profit is a government-run system.

Corrupt freedom-hating leftists would have you believe that the “evil” for-profit insurance companies are sending people to their deathbeds, when in reality it was the for-profit capitalist organization that helped me while their non-profit counterpart told me to go screw off and live in pain forever. And the for-profit’s premium is approximately one-third that of the price gouging non-profit’s.

Furthermore, the leftists are going around claiming that there’s no competition in healthcare. Huh? My real-life experience proves otherwise. There’s plenty of competition – especially when you consider the fact that in addition to BCBS and Aetna, I had about ten other quotes with premiums and coverages all over the board. The “no competition” claim is an outright lie and those who state it should NOT be in public office.

The bottom line here is “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.” We Americans enjoy the best healthcare system in the world. What the leftists and statists are really trying to do is grab more and more control over the U.S. economy and over our lives. We’ll resemble European and other nations where I’d be given a bottle of Advil and pair of crutches in response to my ankle pain, and where thousands with cancer and other serious illnesses are told to go away and die instead of receive treatment.
